Scott Wootton

Fire Systems Projects Manager

One of DEM Fire’s newer recruits, Scott excels at expert fire protection for major companies.

As a leader in our projects team, he oversees the installation of large-scale fire detection systems for businesses across multiple sectors.

“It generally involves working on construction sites or during the refurbishment of large commercial buildings,” he explains.

“I work on the fire detection and delivery side, which involves supervising aspects such as smoke extract systems, VESDA aspirating systems and smoke clearance.”

An electrical spark

Before specialising in design and commission for life safety systems, Scott studied electrical engineering and worked as an electrician. “I fell into this industry through a friend. He knew of a position as an installer and I jumped at that opportunity. I then moved into the commissioning side and worked my way up to supervisor and project manager.”

For Scott, there’s one aspect of his work that he particularly relishes. “I really enjoy the complexity of large-scale designs… and the challenges that come with very large, and sometimes difficult, projects.”

A welcome return

Scott is recently back to Australia after 15 years overseas, where he worked on substantial fire and security projects. “I was born on the Central Coast but moved to the UK in 2002 – and stayed for 16 years. My family and I are back now loving the lifestyle here again. We’ve recently brought a home so we’re looking forward to a new start.”

And it’s something he enjoys at work too. “I like that the project team is going through a new phase. We’re implementing new processes and procedures, and it’s good to be able to have input into that right from the start. At the end of the day I get satisfaction from smooth processes and positive customer feedback, both for myself and the company.”

What Fire Compliance Changes Mean for Annual Fire Statements

As we recently reported, legislation changes now require all staff that conduct Annual Fire Statements to gain accreditation as ‘competent fire safety practitioners’ (CFSPs). As of 1 July, only CFSPs can now legally conduct the work previously covered by Fire Safety Assessment (FSA). Here’s why that’s good news for the industry, for quality assurance…and for property owners.
