Owen Nicholls

Portables Technician and Tester

As Portables Technician and Tester, Owen heads out to sites across Sydney, servicing and repairing portable fire equipment such as extinguishers and blankets.

It’s safe to say that Owen loves the variety that his role at DEM provides him.

“I’m pretty lucky – I get a lot of freedom in my role, which I like. I absolutely could not work in an office or a warehouse.”

With a colourful work history, spanning from commercial cookery to private investigative work and lots more, Owen is finally happy with his home at DEM.

“DEM is kicking goals. We’re growing lots – we started with four or five on the testing team and now we have about 80. We’ve got a lot of guys out there. Plus, we won the 2018 Fire Protection Project of the Year award, which is saying something.”

When Owen isn’t out and about testing and repairing portable fire equipment, he’s spending time with his family or watching the soccer.

What Fire Compliance Changes Mean for Annual Fire Statements

As we recently reported, legislation changes now require all staff that conduct Annual Fire Statements to gain accreditation as ‘competent fire safety practitioners’ (CFSPs). As of 1 July, only CFSPs can now legally conduct the work previously covered by Fire Safety Assessment (FSA). Here’s why that’s good news for the industry, for quality assurance…and for property owners.
