As General Manager, Gary oversees all DEM operations, including our service and project departments – and organisational development.
And he loves putting on a captain’s hat.
“I really like the feeling of steering the ship. I like the responsibility for building and growing the business – and I love working with all the managers and people involved – and that all of our lives are entwined.”
Improvising in style
Gary first joined DEM 17 years ago after his brother, Tom, had become involved.
His eclectic background prior to DEM included roles as an air-conditioning technician, electrical engineer and… jazz musician. And there’s something akin to jazz energy that keeps Gary thriving at DEM. “I love the (sometimes) chaos of it and knowing you’re at the centre. When you constantly have to keep on your toes, find solutions and improve systems and process… it’s inspiring.”
Keeping the music alive
Gary is a dab hand at tennis and cooking but music is probably closest to his heart. “Music gets me excited. It transcends race, nationality… and I still think there’s nothing that compares. It’s the best thing humankind has come up with.”
A rewarding family business
Gary believes working at DEM is ultimately incredibly rewarding, too. “Doing something with family is important. It seems to me to have a higher purpose… and so does this business. The work we do has an immediate effect. We’re responsible for helping to protect people and property. So, it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of.”
